3. It is important to thoroughly check each installation step so that you know what is being installed.  Leaving these options checked is best, but you can do without a desktop shortcut. (Desktop clutter is never good, anyways).  Click Next.

4. Uncheck the checkbox “Install the free Google Toolbar along with CCleaner” – You do not need the Google Toolbar.  Toolbars are easily outdated, a pain to keep updated, and a great way to catch a virus (through toolbar exploits) and slow down browser performance. Click Install.

5. You do not need to view the release notes, so you can uncheck that box.  Click Finish.

Using CCleaner

It is important to close all open applications before using CCleaner, or the software will not clean properly.

This page allows you to manually select what to clean.  The Windows tab pertains to Windows Internet Explorer and system components,  and the Applications tab pertains to all other software installed that create temporary files.  This allows you to clear your internet browsing history, temporary internet files, temp folders and more all at the click of a button.  The check-box selections that are greyed out should be ignored unless you are an advanced user and understand what each option does.

Clicking Analyze scans the system and returns a list of items to be “Cleaned” on the right part of the window.  Then click Run Cleaner.

Note: You do not have to click Analyze.  You can simply click Run Cleaner and it will analyze and clean with one click.

ccleaner-registry

The Registry Cleaner allows you to Scan for Issues.  This scans your system registry for errors ranging from Unused File Extensions, Invalid Default Icons, Application Path Issues and more.  When you uninstall software, a lot of the times it leaves remnants behind in the registry.  This includes .DLL files (Direct Link Library) that are used to run certain applications.  These .DLL’s become unused after the uninstall but remain in the registry, creating clutter.  This allows you to fix the issues to keep and maintain a clean registry.  I have never needed to create a back-up and I have never had a problem afterwards.

When the scan is complete, simply click Fix Selected Issues.  You will be prompted to backup changes to the registry.  Click Yes and save the file.  If something were to go wrong after the registry cleaning, you would be able to undo any changes using that backup file.  After a few uses you will see that saving a backup is not really needed but it is better to be safe than sorry.

Note: You may need to run the registry cleaner more than once in order to get a full clean.

Because sometimes Windows doesn’t want to work, and Uninstalling a Program through the Windows Control Panel just doesn’t pan out.  Sometimes after uninstalling software, the software stays listed as installed.  When you try to uninstall, you are told it is already installed.  This is where CCleaner Tools comes in.  Very useful when ridding your PC of unwanted or old software. (Sometimes even hiding software) A few useful tools in one place, making it easier than using the available tools through Windows.
